XOCHIPILLI (2021)
A large-scale sculpture of Xochipilli, the Mexica god of flowers, also associated with art, beauty, pleasure, sex, and sexuality. Constructed of silk flowers, rhinestones, sequins, and glitter, the monumental sculpture renders the deity’s associations with queerness explicitly visible through the material form. Presented in 2021 at Wave Hill’s Sun Porch, the project celebrates an ancestral legacy of queerness that colonial imperialism has attempted to suppress. This project was made possible through the generous support of Wave Hill’s Van Lier Fellowship.
